Questions? We’ve Got You.
Will the backpack fit me?
Most likely, yes. It's a compact 25L day pack with adjustable padded shoulder straps, so you can snug it close to your back whether you're petite or tall. The breathable mesh back panel keeps it comfortable on warm days, and it's light enough (about 1.5 lb) that you'll forget you're wearing it.
Not sure? Load it with a water bottle and a jacket, tighten the straps until it sits between your shoulders and lower back, and take a short walk. It should feel steady, not like it's pulling you backward.
Not the right fit? Returns are hassle-free within 30 days.
Yes — it's the exact same backpack, sold on its own if you just need one or already have the rest of your gear.
Should I buy it alone or in the Starter Kit?
If you already have a rain cover and first aid kit, the backpack on its own is all you need. If you're starting from scratch, the First Hike Starter Kit includes the backpack, rain cover, basic first aid kit, and digital guide, so you're packed before you even ask "what do I need?"
No. It weighs about 1.5 lb empty, so you'll barely notice it's there. The whole point is to carry what you need and nothing you don't.
It's made of durable 450D nylon, a tough, lightweight fabric that resists scuffs and snags, so it holds up on the trail without adding weight. It isn't fully waterproof, so for rainy days our Backpack Rain Cover slips on in seconds. It's also included in the First Hike Starter Kit."
The quick why: the "D" (denier) measures thread thickness, and 450D sits in a sweet spot. It's noticeably tougher than the thin nylon in ultralight packs but far lighter than heavy canvas or 600D+ fabrics, which is why it works well for a 1.5 lb day pack.
It has padded shoulder straps and a breathable mesh back panel, so it stays comfortable on longer walks and warmer days.
Our first hikes taught us something: you don’t need a closet full of gear to get outside — you just need the right things to start.
After forgetting water, improvising first aid, and wondering what we actually needed, we created the afieldish First Hike Starter Kit.
Everything you need to feel a little more prepared, without the overwhelm.
Start simple. Get outside.
